Understanding the Ramadan Calendar

The Islamic calendar is lunar-based, meaning that months begin with the sighting of the new crescent moon. Ramadan is the ninth month of this calendar, and its start date shifts approximately 11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian (solar) calendar.

Prayer times vary based on geographical location and the position of the sun. The five daily prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha) are determined by the sun's position, which is why prayer times change throughout the year and differ from one location to another.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn (beginning of Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). The pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) should be completed before Fajr time, and the fast is broken at Maghrib time with the evening meal (Iftar).

Special Nights in Ramadan

  • Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power):Believed to fall on one of the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan (most commonly the 27th night). This night commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.
  • Last Ten Nights:The last ten nights of Ramadan are considered especially blessed, with many Muslims increasing their worship and some practicing i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque).
